Enhancing the in-venue experience at Odeon.

Insights from a recent visit to an Odeon location, including observations on background music and digital signage.

Great environments aren’t accidental - they’re designed.

Music, signage and atmosphere influence how long customers stay, how they feel, and how they perceive a brand.

In experiential leisure venues, these elements help create anticipation on arrival, influence guest energy throughout their visit and improve the overall experience and time spent in-venue.

We visited an Odeon location in Norwich to provide some feedback.

What we observed at Odeon.

Odeon has built a strong position as one of the UK’s most recognisable cinema brands. With continued investment in premium formats, memberships and upgraded venues, ODEON is clearly focused on delivering a great cinema experience, which our observations could support. 

Music.

During our visit, there was no noticeable background music in the lobby or Oscars Bar area.

While the venue design felt modern and premium, the absence of music meant some guest spaces lacked atmosphere - particularly waiting areas where customers may spend time before screenings or while ordering food and drinks. 

This creates an opportunity to introduce a carefully curated soundtrack that supports the premium environment, builds anticipation and enhances the overall sense of occasion.

Signage.

There was a strong use of digital signage both outside and inside the venue, with large-format screens promoting films, listings and key offers. 

This creates a dynamic and visually engaging arrival experience, helping customers navigate the venue and stay informed. 

There is an opportunity to build further on this strong foundation through more experiential content within the lobby and bar areas, such as promoting premium formats, food and drink bundles, membership benefits or timed offers during peak dwell moments.

Key opportunities.

Introduce atmosphere-building music across lobby and bar spaces.

Develop curated playlists for foyers, bars and waiting areas that enhance ambience, reinforce premium positioning and build anticipation ahead of screenings.

Tailor the soundtrack to the daypart.

Tailor music throughout the day - from calmer daytime sessions and family visits to more energetic evening and weekend trading periods (using Startle Studio’s scheduler).
