Music, signage and atmosphere influence how long customers stay, how they feel, and how they perceive a brand.

In a competitive retail environment, these elements play a critical role in shaping brand identity and in-store engagement.

We visited a Space NK location in Norwich to provide some feedback.

What we observed at Space NK.

Space NK has built a strong position as a premium beauty retailer, known for trend-led brands, product expertise and a more elevated in-store experience. Our observations and suggestions could support and further enhance that positioning.

Music.

Music was present at a comfortable and consistent volume, with a quality Bose speaker system providing strong coverage across the store.

The playlist leaned towards contemporary female pop and dance, helping create an upbeat and polished atmosphere that suited the brand’s modern positioning. There is an opportunity to refine this further through more intentional playlist curation - aligning music to different shopping moments, seasonal campaigns and customer behaviours throughout the day.

For a beauty-led retailer like Space NK, music can play an important role in shaping mood, encouraging dwell time and reinforcing a premium brand identity.

Signage.

There was a large and eye-catching digital screen positioned outside the store, helping attract attention and create a strong visual presence within the retail environment.

Inside the store, there was no use of digital signage. This creates an opportunity to extend that visual storytelling into the customer journey - using internal screens to support product education, campaign messaging, tutorials or new brand launches.

In a category driven by discovery, innovation and newness, signage can play a valuable role in keeping the experience engaging and informative.
