Enhancing the in-store experience at Urban Outfitters.

Insights from a recent visit to an Urban Outfitters store, including observations on background music and digital signage.

Great environments aren’t accidental - they’re designed.

Music, signage and atmosphere influence how long customers stay, how they feel, and how they perceive a brand.

In a competitive retail environment, these elements play a critical role in shaping brand identity and in-store engagement.

We visited an Urban Outfitters location in Norwich to provide some feedback.

What we observed at Urban Outfitters.

Urban Outfitters has a strong position as a culture-led lifestyle retailer, blending fashion, homeware and curated products within a distinct youth-focused identity. Its stores feel intentionally eclectic and expressive, with music and environment playing a central role in shaping the experience.

Our observations highlight a brand with a strong foundation in experiential retail, with opportunities to refine consistency and deepen the connection between music, space and storytelling.

Music.

Music plays a central role in the Urban Outfitters in-store experience, supported by a strong Bose speaker system that delivers excellent coverage across multiple floors.

Volume levels are well judged for a younger audience, and the overall sound quality is strong - helping reinforce the brand’s energy and presence in-store.

The playlist, however, is highly eclectic, shifting between classic rock, indie and unexpected transitions (for example, moving from artists like The Fray to Lenny Kravitz). While this reinforces a sense of unpredictability and character, the lack of sequencing structure can occasionally feel disjointed from a shopper perspective.

That said, this eclecticism is also part of the brand’s personality - the opportunity is not to simplify it, but to shape it more intentionally so it feels curated rather than random.

Signage.

There was no use of digital signage inside or outside the store.

Instead, the experience relies heavily on physical merchandising, spatial design and cultural touchpoints such as vinyl elements and experiential features (including in-store interaction points like a vinyl player and photobooth-style installations).

While this supports the brand’s analogue, curated feel, there is an opportunity to introduce minimal digital elements that enhance rather than interrupt the environment.

Key opportunities.

1.

Refine the music journey without losing character.

Maintain the eclectic identity while introducing more intentional sequencing to reduce abrupt genre shifts and improve flow.

2.

Strengthen music as a cultural asset.

Build on the brand’s strong Spotify presence by making the in-store experience feel more deliberately curated and aligned with Urban Outfitters’ wider cultural world.

3.

Introduce minimal, experience-led digital content.

Add subtle screens to support product drops, campaigns and cultural storytelling without disrupting the existing analogue, experience-first environment.

What this can look like in practice.

We’ve worked with premium multi-site retailers to create more engaging, brand-led environments that reflect the quality and identity of the brand at every touchpoint.

We partnered with schuh to help strengthen their in-store music experience across a large UK estate. For them, music plays an important role in shaping atmosphere, energy and perception at the point of purchase.

By aligning sound with schuh’s bold, trend-driven identity, we helped create a more consistent and distinctive in-store experience that better reflected how the brand wanted to feel in physical retail - energetic, relevant and culturally connected.

This included:

  • Curated playlists aligned to brand personality
  • Regular updates to keep music fresh and relevant
  • Managed digital signage for their whole estate
  • A consistent approach across locations

Startle have consistently been a great support to our stores. From their content management, music profiling and technical support, Startle have enabled us to create a seamless shopping atmosphere across our full store estate.
