Let's look at the best music for fashion stores and the research behind it.

A single change in music genre, even alongside no other changes, has been shown to shift daily sales by as much as 66% in a UK retail environment. That finding comes from our own controlled study with charity shop chain DEBRA, and it’s some of the clearest evidence available that a store’s soundtrack has a commercial impact.

Let's take a look at the best music for fashion retail stores and the research behind it.

What the DEBRA research found.

We ran a 21-day controlled study at DEBRA’s Milngavie charity shop, cycling three genres - pop, classical and jazz - in even seven-day blocks while holding volume and tempo constant. Jazz produced average daily sales of £379.93, classical £309.58, and pop £228.56.

What clothing-specific research adds.

A study by Yalch and Spangenberg, published in the Journal of Business Research (2000), looked specifically at a simulated clothing store setting and compared familiar music (chart hits aimed at a college-aged audience) against unfamiliar music (older songs played in instrumental form). Shoppers given unlimited time spent longer browsing with the unfamiliar music playing, and importantly didn’t perceive themselves as having stayed any longer.

Why genre and tempo matter more in fashion than you’d think.

The psychology behind both studies comes down to the same three factors: tempo, genre fit and emotional contagion.

Tempo sets the pace of the shopping experience. Slower tempos encourage lingering - more time at the rail, more items tried on, a better chance of an unplanned purchase. Faster tempos move people through the space quicker, which suits a high-footfall flagship on a Saturday but works against a boutique trying to build considered, higher-value baskets.

Genre fit is about matching the soundtrack to who’s actually in the store. A flagship aimed at a younger, trend-led customer can sustain more energy and more contemporary genres than a premium or boutique line, where a quieter more considered soundtrack signals the same quality cues as the clothes on the rail. The DEBRA study’s core lesson - that fit matters more than any single genre - applies just as much here as it did in a charity shop with an older, community-minded customer base.

Emotional contagion is the least talked-about factor but often the most important in fashion retail specifically. Store staff spend their whole shift next to the speakers. When the soundtrack suits the room, staff are calmer and more engaged, and that shows up in how they approach customers on the shop floor.

What music works in a fashion store.

Obviously every brand is different, but here are some suggestions:

  • Flagship and high-footfall stores: contemporary, trend-adjacent genres at a moderate-to-upbeat tempo, matched to the age and style of the core customer rather than defaulting to whatever’s currently in the charts.
  • Boutique and premium stores: slower tempo, more understated genres - the same quality signal a considered store layout and lighting already send.
  • Seasonal and campaign moments: playlists that shift alongside new collection drops or seasonal campaigns, so the in-store soundtrack reinforces the same story as the windows and the signage.
  • Avoid literal chart playlists where possible - the research above suggests curated, slightly less familiar music can extend browsing time without customers feeling like they’ve been kept in-store.

Music licensing: what fashion retailers need to know.

Playing music publicly in a UK fashion store requires two separate licences: PPL, covering record labels and performers, and PRS, covering songwriters and composers. Both are required and neither is included in any consumer streaming subscription. A professional background music service supplies licensed content, but PPL and PRS licenses are always the brand’s own responsibility to sort and hold.

Managing music across multiple fashion stores.

For multi-site fashion retailers, the risk is inconsistency: one store gets the brand’s sound right, another drifts to whatever the shop-floor team prefers that day. Customers who shop in more than one location notice the difference, even if they can’t name it.

That’s where centralised control comes in - head office sets the sound and the schedule, with defined permissions for local adjustment where it genuinely helps - it’s what keeps the brand experience consistent from one store to the next.

How Startle works with fashion retailers.

  • Managed through Studio, Startle’s centralised platform, head office controls the sound across the whole fashion retail estate, with tailored permission levels where suitable.
  • Curated by a team of professional musicologists, playlists are built around the brand, the audience, and the commercial goals of each store format.
  • Hardware and installation and included, and every site runs on a dedicated Startle Player, monitored remotely, backed by Relentless Support™.
  • Digital signage runs on the same platform as the music, so campaign visuals and the soundtrack change together for your new collections and seasonal moments.
