Have you heard of this subgenre?
If you’ve scrolled through TikTok or watched a car-drift edit soundtracked by a dark, driving beat with heavy bass and cowbell hits, you’ve probably come across phonk without even knowing it.
It’s one of the internet’s most distinctive and fast-rising music styles. But where did phonk come from, and what gives it that sound?
Phonk has roots in 1990s Memphis rap - a subgenre known for its raw, underground sound with eerie samples, slow tempos, and unique vocal style. Early Memphis artists like DJ Screw, Three 6 Mafia, and Tommy Wright III helped define the sound that now influences phonk producers decades later.
As online platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube exploded, producers across the world started experimenting with the sound, blending vintage rap samples with trap drums and lo-fi textures. That’s when phonk started to take off.
Wondering where the word came from? In the early 2010s, SpaceGhostPurrp, a rapper and producer from Miami, began using the word phonk (a stylised take on “funk”) to describe his gritty, sample-driven beats. He borrowed heavily from those Memphis tapes - low-fi production, dark atmospheres, and distorted vocals.
Phonk’s sound is easy to recognise once you know the ingredients:
Traditional phonk tends to be slower and murkier, while drift phonk - which emerged around car-drift videos from Russia - is faster, more energetic, and designed to hit hard on social media.
What started as a tribute to 90s hip-hop became a full-blown internet phenomenon.
On platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, phonk tracks have become the unofficial soundtrack to high-energy visuals - car edits, skating clips, gaming montages, and more.
Its DIY roots make it especially appealing to independent producers. Many phonk artists create entirely from home studios, sampling vintage material or building new beats from scratch.
Despite being a niche genre, phonk has reached millions of listeners worldwide - with artists such as Kordhell, DXRK, and Sovv gaining huge streaming numbers.
As with any internet-born genre, phonk continues to evolve. Producers are mixing it with EDM, drum & bass, ambient, and even jazz influences. Some are experimenting with AI-assisted generation and live performance hybrids.
While it’s hard to predict where it’ll go next, one thing’s clear: phonk has already carved out a lasting place in digital music culture.
Phonk is more than just a trend - it’s a blend of past and present, a global underground sound shaped by nostalgia, internet culture, and the creativity of bedroom producers everywhere.
Its rise shows how old influences can be reimagined through new technology and shared online.
